India Playing XI 1st ODI vs NZ: India vs NewZelanad LIVE: India Practice Hyderabad – BIG setback for India, Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the NZ series. Rajat Patidar has been named as Iyer’s replacement. Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid now have no selection dilemmas. With KL Rahul, Axar Patel, and now Shreyas out of the NZ series, Ishan Kishan is set for a comeback being the wicketkeeper in the IND vs NZ 1st ODI. Shubman Gill, who slammed a fine century in his last ODI will also continue. While in KL’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav will get an extended run in the middle-order. Three big selection headaches:
- Who opens with Rohit? Shubman or Ishan?
- Who bats at No 5?
- Three seamers or three spinners?
KL Rahul has flourished in his new role at No 5. He has been designated keeper in ODIs. However, with him absent, India need a wicketkeeper. While KS Bharat has been added to the squad, Ishan Kishan with a double century to his name is the frontrunner. But the Dravid-Rohit pair has to find him a spot. Shubman Gill is also another option at No 5 but considering his recent records in opening, it is unlikely that the team management will tinker with his spot.

The other option is to drop Shubman Gill for Ishan Kishan and play World No 1 batter Suryakumar Yadav at No 4 instead. But with a century in the last match, Shubman has made the selection job much harder.
Shreyas Iyer getting ruled out has solved Rahul Dravid’s one problem. His ouster helps Suryakumar Yadav coming back to the team at No 4. Virat Kohli with rich vein of form and considering his status is undroppable at the moment. Hence, India will have Shubman Gill playing in the ODI. But whether he will open or play in the middle-order is a big call that the team management has to take.
Hardik Pandya’s return will also bolster the line-up. The newly promoted ODI vice-captain was rested for the 3rd ODI against SriLanka. As he takes the No 6 slot in Axar Patel’s absence, India may overlook Shardul Thakur.

India Playing XI 1st ODI: What to expect from 1st ODI?
- Team India has to take a call on the opener. Ishan and Shubman both have done well.
- With Shreyas Iyer out of the series along with KL Rahul, India will play either Ishan or Shubman in the middle-order.
- KS Bharat is the other keeper in the squad and can bat in the middle-order too.
- But it remains to be seen whether India hand him the debut.
- SKY is now an automatic choice in KL Rahul and Iyer’s absence.
- India may look to accommodate Shubman Gill at No 5 instead of SKY.
- In the bowling department, India will continue with Mohammed Siraj and Mohammad Shami and Umran Malik.
- Shardul Thakur may have to wait a bit longer.
- As for spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will once again fight for a spot.
- In Axar Patel’s absence, Washington Sundar will look to grab the opportunity.
