Gurman backed his earlier claims in the latest issue of his newsletter Power On, in which he stated that once the Apple Watch Ultra introduces custom microLED displays in 2024, the company would use them in all of its products. Apple may switch over from its current OLED panels to microLED technology on its iPhone, iPad, and Mac models starting the next year.
According to Gurman, the Apple Watch Ultra will have the company’s first microLED displays in late 2024. Then the display technology might make it to the iPhone lineup, then the iPad line, and finally Mac models. The changeover will probably take some time for the company, and it might take up to ten years for microLED to be available on Macs.
In addition to Apple, Samsung intends to integrate microLED displays in its upcoming Galaxy series of wearables. For its current Galaxy smartwatches lineup, the South Korean tech giant uses OLED displays. According to reports, Samsung’s Display division started a project to develop microLED displays for smartwatches last year and assigned a team to commercialise them.
