A day after a six-storey building collapsed in Surat, the death toll has risen to seven as of Sunday morning, the police were quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
“One woman has been saved. Seven dead bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem to the hospital,” Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6) Rajesh Parmar said. It is still unclear as to how many are still trapped, he added.
Rescue operations by teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) which continued overnight are still underway, as per the police.
When did the building in Surat collapse?
The ground plus five-storey dilapidated building in Sachin, where several textile workers and their families stayed, collapsed on Saturday afternoon.
The police said the incident took place around 3 pm at D N Nagar society in Paligam.
The first body to be recovered from the site was that of a 25-year-old man, around 25 years old. The rescued woman, Kashish Sharma (23), was rushed to New Civil Hospital, where her condition is stable, said officials.
Who resided in the building?
About five of the total 30 houses in the building were occupied, as per Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Gehlot. Most of them were said to be labourers working in factories at Sachin GIDC who lived there on rent.
“The information we have so far is from the other residents in the locality. Since it was a ground plus five-storey building, it was a sandwich-like collapse. Rescue teams including the NDRF and local fire department are removing the rubble” Gehlot told ANI on Sunday morning.
MLA Sandeep Desai told The Indian Express Saturday that the labourers hailed from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Sources said the building is owned by Jay Desai, a resident of Sachin who is at present in the US on a tour.
