Dengue Cases: Dengue Outbreak in BMC Area: Civic Body Intensifies Vector Control Drive | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Around a dozen dengue cases have been reported from Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur under Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the past few weeks, prompting civic officials to intensify their vector-control drive.BMC officials fear the number of cases may soar as the monsoon sets in properly. “Dengue cases have just started to be reported. As of now, the figure is much lower than the number reported around this time last year,” said a BMC official. Last year saw a huge surge in dengue cases in the BMC area, with nearly 100 patients being reported in July itself. Officials said that this year, only one dengue case was reported in Jan and one each from BMC wards 1 and 3, which were near the airport, in May. As part of its vector-control drive, BMC has started visiting houses in Salt Lake to collect data about residents’ health conditions and to generate awareness about how to prevent breeding of mosquitoes. Civic teams are spraying larvicide, especially in dengue-prone areas and places that are easily flooded. Water bodies are being cleaned weekly, including the ponds in Duttabad. “Our anti-dengue drive has been on the entire year,” said BMC MMiC (health) Banibrata Banerjee. Around 3,940 dengue cases were reported in BMC area, in 2023 and 4,222 in 2022.
