Budget 2024 Date Live Updates: While reports suggested that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is all set to table the Union Budget for FY25 on July 23 or 24, there is still no official announcement of the date of the Budget presentation by the government. Moving closer to the date of the Budget presentation, there is a slew of expectations, demands and anticipation from people, industries, and economists alike. 

Meanwhile, the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha has already commenced on June 24 and later on June 26, Om Birla, a three-time BJP MP, was re-elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for a second term. He won against the INDIA bloc’s candidate, Congress’ Kodikunnil Suresh, through a voice vote. The Monsoon Session of the Parliament, according to sources, is expected to begin on July 22 and the Budget presentation will coincide with this. The session is likely to continue until August 9.

Earlier on June 22, Nirmala Sitharaman presided over the 53rd GST Council meeting, which deliberated on various proposals to streamline GST applicability across goods and services, and several recommendations were made to refine tax rates and service exemptions under the GST regime.

According to sources, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the full Budget for FY25 on July 23 or 24, coinciding with the Monsoon Session of the Parliament.

On February 1, 2024, the finance minister had presented the Interim Budget, which is technically a vote on account ahead of the elections to take care of government expenses in the interim till a new Government is voted to power. This happens every 5 years or when the existing government is dissolved and elections are held.

The 52nd GST Council meeting was held on October 7, 2023. According to the data released by the Ministry of Finance, the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) collection came in at Rs 32,409 crore. The State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) stood at Rs 40,265 crore. Meanwhile, Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) was at Rs 87,781 crore, including Rs 39,879 crore collected on imported goods.

Budget 2024 Live Updates: May 2024 GST collection

According to the data released by the Ministry of Finance, Goods & Services Tax (GST) collections during the month of May 2024 stood at Rs 1.73 lakh crore. This is 10 per cent higher than the same period last year. For April, GST collection had breached the Rs 2 lakh crore milestone. The gross GST collection during April was recorded at Rs 2.10 lakh crore, up 12.4 per cent on-year.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the GST Council has recommended setting monetary thresholds for filing appeals by the department in various courts. “To reduce government litigation, the council has recommended a monetary limit of Rs 20 lakh for the GST Appellate Tribunal, Rs 1 crore for High Court, and Rs 2 crore for the Supreme Court for filing appeals by the department,” she said.

The GST Council made following recommendations on GST on services:

  • GST Council has proposed the exemption for specific services offered by Indian Railways to the general public, as well as for intra-railway transactions.
  • The sale of platform tickets and services are now exempt from GST.
  • Accommodation services valued up to Rs 20,000 per person per month, provided for a continuous period of at least 90 days, will also be exempt.

    Budget 2024 Live Updates: Recommendations on changes in GST rate

    After the 53rd GST Council meeting, GST Council recommended the following changes in GST rate:

  • A uniform rate of 5% IGST to apply to imports of aircraft parts, components, testing equipment, tools, and toolkits, irrespective of their HS classification, to provide a fillip to MRO activities subject to specified conditions.
  • All milk cans (of steel, iron and aluminium), will attract 12% GST.
  • All types of carton boxes and cases made from both corrugated and non-corrugated paper or paperboard to attract a 12% GST rate.
  • All solar cookers, whether single or dual energy source, to attract 12% GST.
  • All types of sprinklers, including fire water sprinklers, to attract 12% GST.
