Dumka: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 111th episode of Mann Ki Baat, the first after assuming office for the third consecutive term, paid tributes to the sacrifices and bravery of the Santhal tribal community. The address coincided with the annual celebration of Hul Diwas on June 30, which commemorates the Santhal Hul (rebellion) of 1855 against British oppression.“Today is June 30 which is very important for our tribal brothers and sisters who celebrate the day to mark Hul Diwas,” Modi said, emphasising the significance of the day. He highlighted the courage of tribal brothers Sido and Kanhu, who mobilised their community members to take up arms against foreign rule.Modi also shed light on the historical context, stating, “Sido and Kanhu mobilised thousands of tribals of Jharkhand’s Santhal Pargana who took up arms and fought tooth and nail against British rulers. And this happened in 1855, two years before the first freedom movement of 1857.” He acknowledged the atrocities committed by the British against the tribal community and the restrictions imposed upon them.Modi praised the incredible bravery displayed by the tribal brothers who were martyred in their fight against oppression, emphasising that their ultimate sacrifice continues to inspire the nation. He also encouraged listeners to pay attention to an audio clip featuring an excerpt from a song in the Santhali language, dedicated to the tribal martyrs.
