PUNE: The 22-year-old son of the Zika-positive woman (47) from Kondhwa also tested positive in a confirmed NIV report late on Friday evening.

This is the fourth Zika case reported within a week’s time in the city this season.

The son, who likely got the infection from his mother, was asymptomatic. His was among the 13 samples that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) collected after his mother tested positive for dengue and zika. PMC had collected three more samples from her neighbours and was conducting a re-survey of pregnant women, since Zika could impact unborn babies the most.

PMC assistant health officer Dr Rajesh Dighe said, “The son of the 47-year-old woman from Mundhwa’s Korde vasti has also tested positive for Zika. He is asymptomatic currently. Although he has tested positive, the infection is self-limiting. The sample was confirmed by NIV. He likely got the infection from his mother, but the incubation period for zika can last up to six months. The youth had only reported headache a few weeks ago, but is safe.”

PMC conducted fogging activity in the house and the neighbouring homes along with larvicidal activities. The other three family members had tested negative for the infection, added Dighe.

Blood samples of suspected Zika virus patients are pouring into the apex ICMR-NIV virology laboratory from various parts of the city, following the positive diagnosis of two patients from the same family on June 22.
