4 days after bridge collapse in Araria, another bridge crumbles in Bihar – this time in Siwan | India News

Four days after a bridge collapsed in Araria, another bridge collapsed in the Darounda area of Siwan on Saturday – making this the fifth instance of a bridge collapse in the last two years in Bihar.

The Siwan administration said a 100-metre bridge over a canal in the Ramgarha panchayat of the Darounda block collapsed from one end. The bridge was constructed about 30 years ago. No casualty has been reported in the bridge collapse.

A Siwan administrative official said: “The brick wall and pillars connecting the bridge to the approach road weakened after the canal was recently dug. The matter will be probed.”

On June 18, a major portion of a 182-metre bridge collapsed at Sikti in Araria. The bridge, made at a cost of Rs 12 crore by a Central agency, had just been completed. Only approach roads from either side had to be constructed before its inauguration.

On March 22, one labourer was killed and eight others were injured after three slabs of an under-construction bridge over Kosi River in Supaul collapsed. The 10.5 km-long bridge worth over Rs 1,200 crore is being constructed between Bakour in Supaul and Bheja in Madhubani.

    Festive offer

In June 2023, a 200-metre stretch of the upcoming Aguani (Khagaria)-Sultanganj (Bhagalpur) bridge over River Ganga caved in after three pillars supporting it collapsed. No casualty was reported in the incident.

The 3.1 km-long bridge worth Rs 1,710 crore is set to be completed by November this year. The initial deadline for the completion of the bridge, however, expired in 2019.

In April 2022, the superstructure of an under-construction bridge in Bhagalpur’s Sultanganj collapsed owing to strong winds. No casualty was reported in the incident.
