Soon after reports emerged of their scheduled departure after
India vs Canada
in Lauderhill, Florida,
which was eventually washed out
, there were rumours of there being disciplinary concerns with Gill.
After the
India vs Canada game was abandoned
, Vikram Rathour, the Indian batting coach, quashed the speculations, stating that the decision to send Gill and Avesh back was taken before the tournament began.
Rathour clarified that it was pre-decided that only two reserves would travel to the West Indies for the Super Eights.
“This was a plan from the beginning. When we come to the US, four players will come together. After that two will be released and two will travel with us to West Indies. So, this plan was made from the beginning since the team was selected. This was planned so we are just following that,” Rathour said in the press conference as India’s final match of the group stage against Canada was abandoned due to rain.
The batter himself came up with a savage response over the bubbling rumours and even of differences with India captain Rohit Sharma as well.
Gill posted an Instagram story featuring Rohit and his daughter Samaira, with the caption reading: “Sammy and I learning the art of discipline from @rohitsharma45.”
India have had an unbeaten run in the T20 World Cup with wins over Ireland, Pakistan and the USA, followed by the washout. In the Super Eight, India will be up against Afghanistan, Australia and Bangladesh. The Men in Blue open against Afghanistan on 20 June in Barbados.
