Nashik: A 50-year-old person died of
dengue at a hospital on June 4, civic health department confirmed on Saturday, as the city recorded 40 new cases of the vector-borne infection within a week, taking its case tally to 57 between June 1 and 14.The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has sent the case reports of the patient to a special committee led by deputy director of health department in Nashik division to ascertain if the patient died of dengue or comorbidities. The patient was a resident of Govind Nagar. If the committee confirms, it will be the first death due to dengue this year. There have been 167 dengue cases between Jan 1 and June 14. The NMC’s health department has appealed to residents for not keeping accumulated water in homes as these are favourable spots for mosquito breeding.According to the NMC health department officials, mosquito breeding spots have been identified in residential societies across the city. These breeding spots are primarily found in flowerpots, refrigerators, water coolers, and open water storage areas within residential premises. Interestingly, no dengue cases have been reported in the slums, an official said.“In summer, water coolers were used excessively by the residents. As mosquito breeding occurs in clean water, they were found in the trays of water coolers as well,” said am official from NMC.“We started taking measures like creating awareness among residents about how to prevent the spread of dengue. We roped-in students in city colleges to create awareness and prevent dengue outbreak,” said an official from NMC. Nashik city witnessed 25 cases in Jan, 22 cases in Feb, 11 cases in March, 13 in April, 39 cases in May, and 57 cases in June so far.
