How To Prevent Obesity: Tips Recommended By Experts

Obesity is a serious health issue that affects millions of individuals around the globe. It is caused when an extra amount of calories are stored in the body as fats. According to fresh data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) around 25 percent of Indians are obese or overweight. “Abdominal obesity is prevalent in 53 percent of Urban and 19 percent of rural adults,” the ICMR report reads.

Obesity can lead to several serious health issues like fatty liver, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver disease, sleep apnea and even certain cancers.

According to Dr Sanjay Patolia, Bariatric Surgeon, Khyati Multispeciality Hospital, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, “Obesity is a major health problem. It does not only affect the quality of life but also has some influence on your health. When your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 18 to 25 we call it normal weight, when it is between 25 to 35 we call it Obesity Level 1 and when it is above 35 for the Indian population it is called morbid obesity.”

However, with proper measures and adapting healthy lifestyle habits, one can prevent obesity:

As per Dr Napalai Poorirerngpoom, a Preventive Medicine Specialist, “Obesity is a complex condition with implications for long-term health, but it can be managed with the right approach.”

Dr Napalai said in an Instagram video, “Obesity is not just about weight, it’s a health condition that increases the risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. Recognizing the need for a healthy and sustainable weight is the first step towards managing obesity.”

    Healthy Lifestyle Habits

For people who are dealing with fatty liver due to obesity, Dr Atul N.C. Peters shared in an Instagram post that reads, “Small and frequent meal patterns should be adopted and late night meals and midnight snacking should be avoided.”

    Perform Exercise Regularly

To overcome obesity one needs to exercise at least 4 to 5 times a week. Incorporating 15 minutes of moderate exercise daily such as walking, cycling or swimming could help you reduce the extra pounds.

    Seek Support

As per Dr Napalai, “Obesity management is not a journey to embark on alone. Professional guidance from healthcare experts and nutritionists can provide the motivation and accountability needed for success.”
