Prafulla’s mother, Alka Dhariwal, proudly recounts his milestones. Prafulla, who was a standout student and head boy in Pune, maintained a balance between his academic and personal interests. His teachers and friends remember him as approachable, disciplined, and always willing to share his knowledge. Alka Dhariwal explains how they provided Prafulla with textbooks from various educational boards, allowing him to understand concepts in different ways. “Prafulla was a night owl. He enjoyed cricket and chess. We must understand the value of sports in building concentration, sportsmanship, social skills, and teamwork,” she says. She also emphasized the importance of teaching children selflessness and consideration for others.
Academic and Personal Achievements
Prafulla’s academic journey is marked by numerous quiz competitions and international Olympiads. His former teacher, M Prakash, credits Prafulla’s success to his intrinsic motivation. “Some teachers would attend our classes but Prafulla could solve problems better than them and sometimes helped them. At some point, it was decided that a student cannot represent the country in two Olympiads. Otherwise, Prafulla would have got gold in chemistry too,” Prakash recalls.
Contributions to AI and Future Aspirations
Prafulla joined OpenAI as a research intern in 2016 and quickly rose through the ranks. His classmate, Rajat Dandekar, recalls their study sessions and Prafulla’s ability to explain complex concepts. “We were at his house late one night and he took us to his balcony and showed us all the constellations. His interest in astronomy was not limited to just theory but he loved watching the sky,” Dandekar says. Prafulla’s mother, Alka, hopes he will contribute to society by providing access to quality educational resources, especially in rural areas.Legacy of Humility and Knowledge
Prafulla has remained humble and supportive of his peers. His blend of academic excellence, humility, and passion for learning continues to inspire those around him. His story is a testament to the importance of a well-rounded upbringing and the potential of Indian talent on the global stage.
“Prafulla has done everything a mother could hope for and more. In the future, I wish he would do something that helps everyone in society, especially those in rural areas or the disadvantaged,” says Alka. “India has a lot of talent, but it remains underdeveloped. I want Prafulla to do something such that every child in the rural area gets access to the best books, the best resources, and the opportunity to appear for all exams.”
His school principal, Pallavi Naik, remembers his achievements: “He was head boy and in Std IX when he won a gold medal in the International Astronomy Olympiad in China in 2009.”
