    As cyclone Remal intensifies, Tripura is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the IMD for further developments regarding the cyclonic storm. Given the current situation, all District Magistrates were advised to follow the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD’s) impact-based advisories and take appropriate measures.

    Cyclone Remal Live Updates: Flights suspended at Kolkata airport

    Kolkata Airport Authority on Saturday announced to suspension of flight operations for 21 hours due to Cyclone Remal’s landfall.

    “In view of Cyclone Remal’s impact on the coastal region of West Bengal, including Kolkata, a meeting was held with the stakeholders and it has been decided to suspend the flight operations from 1200 IST on May 26 to 0900 IST on May 27, due to predicted heavy winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall at Kolkata,” Kolkata Airport Authority said in a statement.

    Cyclone Remal is forecasted to significantly impact the coastal region of West Bengal, including the city of Kolkata.

    Thousands of people would be evacuated and brought to shelters from the vulnerable areas in the coastal villages of West Bengal as the eastern state braces for impact of severe Cyclone Remal around Sunday midnight, officials told HT.

    “We have already identified the low lying and vulnerable areas. Initially we plan to evacuate around 8,000-10,000 villagers from low lying areas. While some may move to the cyclone shelters by Saturday night, the rest would be brought in on Sunday,” said Sumit Gupta, district magistrate of South 24 Parganas.

    This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season.

    The deep depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ and was centered approximately 360 km south-southeast of Khepupara and 350 km south-southeast of Sagar Island, according to an update issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 7:50 pm on Saturday.
