Aditi On Her Gajagamini Walk
In an exclusive interview with Zoom, Aditi Rao Hydari revealed that she isn’t aware of the specific name or technique for the walk featured in the scene, as it is not something she learned as a Bharatanatyam dancer and was a creative direction given to her by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Talking to Zoom, She said, “I want to ask somebody, Sanjay sir, my dance teacher, what is it? Is it the Gajagamini walk, the swan walk? What walk is that I don’t know! I’ll say it was what Sanjay sir asked me to do. I followed Sanjay sir and what he told me. I know in Kathak there is Mayur chaal (peacock walk), then there is Gajagamini (walk of seduction), but I am sure it is in all the dance forms but I don’t know, I should find out.”
Aditi On Her Gajagamini Walk Going Viral
Aditi also mentioned that Sanjay was very particular about how she looked during the walk and even the the way her dupatta flew, among other things. She added, “He said that he wanted that dupatta to fall on a particular beat, the head to turn and the ‘chann‘ (sound of the ghungroo) to come exactly on the beat, so it was all his thought and his creation.”
Aditi further shared an interesting anecdote about her meeting with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the role in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. She mentioned that Bhansali appreciated the fact that she wasn’t as “petite” as she usually appeared when they first met. Aditi offered to lose the extra weight she had put on in just 10 days, but Bhansali forbade her from doing so, stating that he found her beautiful as she was.
