Android 15’s first beta was limited to just select Google Pixel smartphones. At the ongoing I/O 2024 developers conference, Google released the second beta, now available for select Pixel smartphones and devices from OEM partners such as OnePlus, Nothing, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and more.
The key features of Android 15 Beta 2 include lower app-launch time, reduced power draw during app launch, faster camera launch, and faster system boot time. With Beta 2, Google is also improving how various services can access the GPU. The company also standardised OpenGL implementation to improve compatibility and performance in some cases.
The latest iteration of Android is also said to be more secure and private and has gained features like private space, improvement on select photo access, secured background activity, improved user experience with smoother transitions, and a more helpful UI. On large-screen devices like tablets, Beta 2 also offers improved multitasking, improved picture-in-picture mode, and more.
There are also plenty of minor features introduced in the second Beta of Android 15, which include predictive feedback, now enabled by default, customisable vibration effects for notifications, new data types for health connect, and more.
Android 15 Beta 2 is also introducing an AV1 software decoder from VideoLAN for devices that don’t have an AV1 encoder hardware, which is 3x more performant than the legacy AV1 software decoder. It can enable HD video playback even on entry-level and mid-tier smartphones.
Android 15 Beta is now available for more devices
Android 15 Beta 2 is currently available for Pixel smartphones, starting from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 8 series. It is also available for select smartphones from brands like Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Do note that this is still an early build of Android 15, and is not recommended to be installed on primary devices. It may not even have all the features you expect from smartphone makers.
