KOLKATA: The dengue surge continues in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) area of Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur with 88 fresh cases reported in the last week, taking the total figure to 324 so far this year.
There has been a spike in dengue cases since the first week of August, with 176 new cases reported from BMC in the last two weeks. The total dengue figure this year is already thrice higher than last year’s when around 108 cases were reported till the third week of August.
Of the 88 fresh cases last week, 33 have been reported from three wards in Rajarhat-Gopalpur. Ward 4 reported nine cases, ward 5 reported 11 and ward 12 reported 13 cases – the highest among the 41 BMC wards. These cover areas Baguiati, Kaikhali and nearby pockets. In comparison, wards in Salt Lake and adjacent areas reported one or two cases each. Only wards 40 and 41, covering a large part of Sector I, reported four and five cases respectively.
Civic officials said though all precautionary steps were being taken, cases were expected to rise as this was the peak dengue season. But officials said there was nothing to panic about as most cases have been mild so far. “We are conducting extensive dengue-control measures, like spraying larvicide and checking for stagnant water,” said a BMC official.
