In the list of upcoming electric scooters, we have explained about potential launches from Honda, Yamaha, Bajaj, Ather, Kinetic, etc
Electric scooters are slowly becoming the primary source of urban commute essentially because of their low running costs and more practicality compared to ICE scooters. In this article, we talk about 6 such electric scooters that are to be launched in India before 2025.
1. Honda Activa Electric
Honda has chartered a plan for the next 5 years in India and it has committed to launch 10 new electric 2-wheelers. Honda had recently patented a swingarm-mounted motor for its EVs which is expected to debut on these models. The first electric scooter will obviously be the Activa Electric considering its record sales over the years.
It is believed to be made available in 2 variants – a model with a fixed battery and a model with a swappable battery. According to reports, Honda has partnered with Hindustan Petroleum to install battery-swapping stations across the country at these petrol pumps.
2. Suzuki Burgman Electric
The Suzuki e-Burgman has already been launched in Japan and is currently being tested on Indian roads which means it will be launched sooner than expected. Currently, it is being powered by a 4kW motor with a peak torque of 18Nm and a range of just 45km with a top speed of 60 kmph.
The battery is expected to be a swappable unit which should reduce the charging times. Interestingly, the same battery is being used by Honda as a result of a battery-sharing platform between Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki.
3. Yamaha E-01
Initially, Yamaha had plans to launch the electric Neo’s which is already plying on European roads as we speak. The Neo’s comes with the same swappable battery that is shared with Honda and offers a range of 45kms on a single charge. However, as time passed, Yamaha India changed their plans after studying the Indian market and looking at how EVs like Ather, iQube and Ola have changed the Indian mindset towards premium products that offer good range and are priced effectively.
Now, Yamaha India is developing a sporty electric scooter to take on the competition and will be priced at a premium, but it has promised that the product will be exciting, stylish, and sporty, which are the values of a true Yamaha.
4. Kinetic e-Luna
The Luna is making a comeback and this time it will be in an electric avatar. The design of the electric moped has been leaked and looks to be very practical. The lighting is expected to be LED all around and sports an LCD instrument cluster. The battery is present underneath the beefy floorboard which is very practical to carry things on it.
The e-Luna will come with a split-seat setup and the rear seat could be removed to install accessories like a top box making it a capable multi-utility electric vehicle. It also gets crash guards at the front and even foot pegs for the rider. The details on the battery and motor are not available yet and we expect the range to be around 60-70 kms with a top speed of 50kmph. The price of the Kinetic e-Luna could be between Rs.70,000 to Rs.80,000 ex-showroom.
5. Bajaj Chetak
The Bajaj Chetak is expected to go through an upgrade and the new model supposedly has an increased range of up to 110km. The current model sports a 2.9kWh battery which has a certified range of 95 kms and the new model might have a bigger battery of 4kWh and hence the increased range of 110 kms.
Apart from this, the rest of the vehicle will mostly remain the same and that’s not a bad thing as the Chetak feels very premium with a robust steel unibody, Bluetooth connectivity, geo-fencing, OTA updates, colour LCD console, reverse mode for parking at lower speeds, etc.
6. Ather new variants
Ather Energy CEO Tarun Mehta has confirmed that there will be not one but two more models under Ather’s portfolio and the announcement can be expected only by next year. According to Mehta, they have the majority of the sports scooter segment covered by the current Ather 450 lineup and hence are more interested in exploring the comfort and more practical side of scooters.
On these terms, we can expect the new scooter to be bigger in dimensions to accommodate a larger seat for a comfortable experience for both the rider and the pillion. We can also expect to have a larger under-seat storage courtesy of the bigger seat. Other features like the 7-inch touchscreen instrument cluster will be carried over and the more affordable variants will get the 7-inch LCD that was introduced on the 450S.
