Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Cooperative and Marketing K. Atchannaidu on January 3, Friday, released ₹148.37 crore towards the compensation for 23,450 fisherfolk affected by the pipeline project of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in Kakinada and Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema districts.
The compensation amount was directly credited to the bank accounts of the fisherfolks whose livelihood was affected for more than six months owing to the ONGC pipeline project.
Addressing a gathering of the beneficiaries at a programme at Coringa in Tallarevu mandal of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, Mr. Atchannaidu said:“The TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance government is preparing to offer 70% subsidy on engines and fishing boats to fisherfolk. The same facility was implemented by the TDP’s tenure between 2014 and 2019.”
Mt. Atchannaidu said that the State government would pay ₹20,000 compensation to every affected fisherfolk for the period of annual fishing ban in the Bay Bengal, beginning in March. At present, the compensation paid for the fishing ban stands at ₹10,000.
MLC Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, Mummudivaram MLA Datla Subba Raju, Kakinada MLA Vanamadi Venkateswara Rao, special representative of Pondicherry Union Territory Malladi Krishna Rao and other officials were present.
