Stockholm-based HealthTech company Elekta has secured a loan of up to €100 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Union’s financing arm.

The financing falls under the EIB Group’s TechEU programme, which is designed to strengthen European investment in strategic technologies and innovation, and it also feeds into EU objectives around health research, competitiveness and advanced medical technology.

“Europe has world-leading medical-technology companies and we need to make sure they can continue investing and innovating here. This financing will support the next generation of cancer and neurological treatments,” said Karl Nehammer, Vice-President, EIB.

The EIB loan will cover up to half of a roughly €200 million research programme that Elekta plans to carry out between 2026 and 2029. Most of the work will be based in Sweden and the Netherlands.

In 2025 alone, the EIB Group signed €100 billion in new financing and advisory support across more than 870 projects tied to priorities such as climate action, digitalisation, security and defence, and social infrastructure.

Founded in 1972 by Lars and Laurent Leksell and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, Elekta develops precision radiation medicine used to treat a range of cancers, including brain tumours, breast cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer, as well as certain neurological disorders.

The company says its solutions are built around adaptive radiotherapy, precision treatment delivery and integrated clinical workflows, and that its technology treats more than 2 million patients every year. It now employs around 4,000 people and has offices in more than 40 countries, selling into over 120 markets worldwide.

Klara Eiritz, Chief Financial Officer, Elekta, said, “As demand for cancer care continues to grow, healthcare providers are looking for solutions that help them treat more patients while maintaining quality and precision. This financing provides additional flexibility to support our long-term strategy and continued investments in innovation that improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and the patient experience.”

The financing will back Elekta’s work across radiotherapy, radiosurgery, brachytherapy and the software platforms used to plan and deliver these therapies. It is aimed at improving treatment for a wide range of conditions, including tumours in the brain and body, essential tremor and certain forms of epilepsy.

The MedTech company aims to make treatments more accurate and efficient while enabling healthcare providers to treat a growing number of cancer patients.

The financing from EIB comes on the heels of recent EIB-backed HealthTech financings in Europe, including a €20 million venture debt agreement signed with Finnish digital pathology firm Aiforia in July.
