
RGB Stripe OLED panels are the new hotness in 2026. The new OLED panel technology is designed to improve text clarity and color performance, which potentially give a monitor like the ROG Swift OLED PG27UCWM a broader appeal beyond just a typical gaming monitor.
That is, perhaps, why Asus takes the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach. At a glance, it might seem like a typical 4K OLED gaming monitor. It has a 26.5-inch tandem 4K RGB Stripe OLED panel, a 240Hz refresh rate, and HDR support with VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certification. But it's also rounded out with tons of features, which helps make the higher price of $1,200 easier to swallow.
The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27UCWM has the company’s unique TrueBlack display finish, which is designed to deliver an ultrahigh-contrast experience in a wide variety of lighting conditions. It does so with a high-gloss coat that minimizes the impact of ambient light across the display.
It’s not just marketing drivel. The TrueBlack finish provides noticeably deeper black levels in a bright room. The matte OLED finish on Samsung’s OLEDs looks positively hazy by comparison. Glossy OLED monitors from competing brands also look less contrast-rich, though the difference is most noticeable in a very bright room—brighter, I suspect, than most PC gaming dens.
I also feel it comes across in how colors present. Technically, the monitor’s results are modest for an OLED monitor: It has a color gamut that spanned 94 percent of DCI-P3 and 89 percent of AdobeRGB. That’s a tad more narrow than top QD-OLED monitors, which can hit up to 98 percent and 95 percent, respectively. However, the ultra-clear, high-contrast look of the panel amplifies the sense of impact. I’m not saying it’s better than the best competitors, but the PG27UCWM’s overall image quality is in the upper tier. That's at least partially due to the fact that RGB Stripe OLED also improves “color volume," which is a display's ability to maintain color that gamut had max brightness.
Unfortunately, the vivid and contrast-rich image is paired with mirror-like reflections. I could likely use the monitor to shave. It’s not a problem in a dark room, but it’s noticeable when even modest ambient light is present.
This is an important, and divisive, point. Many OLED purists adore an ultra-gloss finish because it highlights the rich contrast and color the technology can provide. Others, myself included, prefer matte displays that reduce or eliminate discernible reflections.
There’s no right answer to this question, but you’ll need to decide your preference before you make a purchase.
Beneath the PG27UCWM’s glossy coat you’ll find a tandem RGB Stripe OLED panel with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160. It’s crisp. Earlier OLED monitors have used an unusual sub-pixel arrangement that could hurt image clarity, but the PG27UCWM has a more conventional RGB sub-pixel layout that eliminates the issue. You'll sometimes see this marketed as “5th-Gen QD-OLED," and it initially launched in 34-inch monitors like the Alienware AW3426DW. But finally, the PG27UCWM is bringing it to the more standard 27-inch size.
Text clarity, in particular, has always been one of the chief issues about those shopping for OLED monitors, and I no longer have complaints in that regard. The resolution helps, too, providing a pixel density of about 165 pixels per inch across the 26.5-inch panel. The panel’s sharpness was excellent with the monitor connected to both my Windows 11 desktop and my MacBook Air M4.
HDR is where the PG27UCWM’s tandem OLED panel really begins to earn its keep. My testing found it can hit up to 800 nits of brightness. While that’s not a record-setting result, it’s in line with other premium OLED monitors, which typically offer 800 to 900 nits in my testing (the best barely clear 1,000 nits). The monitor also supports Dolby Vision HDR, which is rare.
The PG27UCWM’s brightness, contrast, and resolution combine to deliver real impact in HDR games. It’s so bright that it can at times feel overwhelming. Fortunately, Asus includes HDR brightness adjustment options that let you tone down the brightness if you’d prefer.
Asus’ PG27UCWM isn’t uniquely bright in HDR though. The Alienware AW3426DW, Acer Predator X27 X1, and MSI MPG 32URXW are among the monitors I’ve tested that deliver similar HDR brightness (and some of which are significantly cheaper). Still, the PG27UCWM performs much better than least expensive OLED monitors like the entry-level Alienware AW2726DM, which can only deliver roughly 400 nits in HDR.
The PG27UCWM can reach a refresh rate of up to 240 Hz at 4K resolution. That’s standard for a high-end 4K OLED in 2026. It also provides a dual-mode feature that can reduce the resolution to 1080p in exchange for a refresh rate of up to 480 Hz. That’s less common, though many OLED monitors now offer a similar feature.
I think the 1080p/480Hz mode will prove niche, as the monitor’s motion clarity is already excellent at 4K and 240 Hz. Motion blur is minimal and small objects are easy to make out. Though perhaps most useful in games, the monitor’s motion clarity is also noticeable on a Windows 11 or macOS desktop. Scrolling text is readable and OS animations look ultrasmooth.
Still, the 480 Hz mode has uses. It’s ideal for people who like to play competitively in esports titles, yet also want to enjoy maximum image quality in single-player games. The PG27UCWM can handle both without compromise.
The PG27UCWM lists compatibility with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, Nvidia G-Sync, and VESA Adaptive Sync. In practice, many monitors that list support for only one of these can work with all three, as they are based on the same core technology. However, I always prefer to see official support listed, so you don’t have to guess whether adaptive sync will work with your PC or game console.
The PG27UCWM is more than just excellent image quality though. Asus has packed it full with a treasure trove of features to sweeten the deal.
The monitor’s design is top-notch. It includes attractive transparent plastic elements on the rear of the display and an RGB-LED logo that can be synced to other RGB-LED devices with Asus’ Aura Sync. An ergonomic stand is included and offers the usual range of adjustment for height, tilt, swivel, and pivot; VESA mounting for third-party arms and stands is possible with a provided adapter.
There’s also an 1/4-inch screw mount on the top of the stand neck. This is a common type of mount for camera and streaming equipment. You can use the mount to place a webcam or ring light above the monitor. It’s an uncommon but useful feature.
I do have one nitpick with the stand, and that’s the stand base. Asus opts for a wide base that takes up a lot of desk space. It’s not the largest I’ve seen, but I prefer the more compact stand base found with competitors like the MSI MPG 272URX and Alienware AW2725Q. On the plus side, though, the stand is remarkably solid. Most monitor stands allow a hint of wobble if I purposefully jostle my desk, but the PG27UCWM is unbothered.
Image-quality purists will be happy to see the monitor is packed with adjustments. These include multiple color space presets, color temperature and gamma modes that target precise values, and six-axis color saturation adjustment.
The monitor even has a built-in sensor that can detect ambient light and the user’s presence. This is used primarily to enable the monitor’s OLED burn-in reduction features, which can turn off the monitor automatically when you step away (if it’s not on, it won’t burn in).
Connectivity is great, too. The monitor has two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 2.1, and one USB-C port with DisplayPort input for a total of four video inputs. All of the inputs can reach 4K at 240 Hz, and the DisplayPort 2.1 port offers UHBR20 data rates of up to 80Gbps, which means it can hit the 4K/240 Hz target without display stream compression.
The USB-C port offers 90 watts of power delivery for charging a connected laptop or tablet. A USB-C hub is included, as well, and provides three downstream USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports. The USB-A ports are accessible through the USB-C input or a USB-B input. A KVM switch is present as well. As if that wasn't all, Asus even throws in a three-year warranty for good measure.
The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27UCWM is a great gaming monitor with a long list of features. It has a beautiful, sharp image, smooth-motion clarity, good HDR, lots of display inputs, and a USB hub. It even looks nice on a desk. The super-vivid, super-reflective TrueBlack coat won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it delivers on its promise to improve perceived contrast.
Which brings us to the only serious issue with the PG27UCWM: the price.
The monitor will set you back $1,200 at retail price. That’s a lot of clams for a 27-inch 4K OLED monitor. The PG27UCWM does a lot to justify a higher price, but I can’t broadly recommend the PG27UCWM over less expensive options like the PG27UCDM (currently $950) or MSI MPG 272URX (currently $800). Neither of those have the newer RGB Stripe OLED, of course, but that might not be enough for the average gamer to full appreciate given the hundreds of dollars of difference in price.
Still, the PG27UCWM is worth consideration if you want a flagship 27-inch 4K OLED monitor with the latest panel technology and a boatload of features when it becomes available in October. A 32-inch model will also be launched alongside it.
