A 21-year-old woman, Varada Prasanna, was allegedly killed by Kusuma Abhilash, 21, near the Fourth Bridge in Rajamahendravaram city on Monday (August 10, 2026) night. Abhilash then allegedly attempted to end his own life, in what the police described as an attempt by the two to die together.

The incident came to light after National Highway authorities alerted the city police to the presence of the two and a two-wheeler on the roadside at around 11.30 p.m.

According to a release issued by East Godavari Superintendent of Police D. Narasimha Kishore on Tuesday, Ms. Prasanna died of knife injuries. Abhilash was found unconscious and is critical in a private hospital.

The two had reportedly arrived at the spot on a two-wheeler at around 8.30 p.m. Based on preliminary information provided by Abhilash, the police said the two decided to end their lives after their parents rejected their marriage proposal, citing community.

The Three Town police have registered a case and the investigation is on. The body has been sent to the Government General Hospital for post-mortem.

Those in distress or having suicidal thoughts can call the East Godavari police helpline at 70757-49825, or Tele-MANAS at 14416.
