Discovered Materials has raised $9 Mn in a seed round led by Lightspeed India Partners, with participation from Y Combinator, Peak XV Partners, and angel investors.

The startup is looking to use AI agents to shorten the years-long and capital-intensive process of discovering and commercialising new semiconductor materials.

Founded by IIT Madras alumni Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, the startup will use the capital to expand its team and lab infrastructure and scale its AI agents for materials simulation, synthesis, and experimental validation.

AI-powered materials discovery startup Discovered Materials has raised $9 Mn (about ₹85.9 Cr) in a seed funding round led by Lightspeed India Partners.

The round also saw participation from Y Combinator and Peak XV Partners, along with angel investors including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar.

The San Francisco-based startup plans to deploy the fresh capital to expand its team and laboratory infrastructure and scale its AI agents for materials research.

Founded in 2026 by IIT Madras alumni Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, Discovered Materials is building AI agents to automate parts of the materials discovery process for chips, including simulation, synthesis and experimental validation.

The startup is looking to address the semiconductor industry’s growing power consumption and thermal management challenges. As AI workloads increase the heat generated by GPUs and other chips, semiconductor companies need materials that can reduce heat generation and improve heat dissipation.

The funding comes as the semiconductor industry faces growing challenges around power consumption and thermal management. AI workloads have pushed GPUs and other chips towards increasingly high heat densities, creating a need for materials that can both reduce heat generation and improve heat dissipation.

According to Discovered Materials, GPUs currently handle heat fluxes of around 140 watts per square centimetre, with the figure expected to increase as computing requirements rise. Better materials could enable technologies such as 3D chip stacking, in which memory and logic wafers are placed closer together to improve computing efficiency.

However, discovering a material and making it suitable for use inside semiconductor fabrication facilities can take several years and require hundreds of millions of dollars. The startup is looking to shorten this “lab-to-fab” timeline using AI agents capable of conducting interdisciplinary research and identifying promising materials.

Discovered Materials claims that during its three-month Y Combinator programme, it simulated, synthesised, and tested thermal interface materials that matched the performance of products developed over several years by large chemical companies.

Alongside the funding announcement, the startup unveiled Material Discovery Bench, an open-source benchmark that evaluates the ability of frontier AI models to identify materials for semiconductor applications.

The funding comes amid growing investor interest in startups developing specialised AI agents for industry-specific workflows.

For instance, agentic AI startup Kily recently raised ₹30 Cr from Sorin Investments, Razorpay and Wyser Capital to build AI agents for consumer brands across ecommerce and quick commerce.

Meanwhile, Rivvun AI raised $7.5 Mn in June to help enterprises identify and recover revenue and spending leakages. Healthcare AI startup Mykare also raised $3.2 Mn to expand its AI-native healthcare operating system.
