Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Thursday (August 6, 2026) hit out at the Government accusing Home Minister Amit Shah of not being ready to give a statement on the police action against student protestors on July 20. Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan asked Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to convey the sentiments of the Opposition to the Home Minister.
The Lok Sabha passed the The Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, on Thursday (August 6, 2026). The Bill seeks to amend the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, the Income-tax Act, 2025, and the Finance Act, 2026.

The Rajya Sabha will consider the Appropriation (No.3) Bill, 2026. It was approved by the Lok Sabha earlier. The legislation authorises the appropriation of money out of the Consolidated Fund of India to meet the amounts spent on certain services during the financial year ended on the 31st of March, 2023, in excess of the amounts granted for those services and for that year.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (August 5, 2026) in an effort to break the parliamentary deadlock, with the two sides discussing the proposed delimitation Bill and the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment (FCRA) Bill, 2026.
Lok Sabha extended time for the presentation of the Report of the Joint Committee on the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025 upto the last week of the Winter Session, 2026.

The Bill further amends the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, the Income-tax Act, 2025, and the Finance Act, 2026.
In particular, the main changes have to do with extending existing tax holidays for companies such as Apple that supply machinery and tooling to Indian factories, providing certainty and reducing red tape for foreign fund managers looking to relocate to India, and easing the process for foreign companies to set up data centres in India.
When asked about Rajya Sabha proceedings, CPI MP P Sandosh, said, “That was in fact a big achievement for the opposition, we were continuously demanding that the HM should come and make a statement, it was a very earnest, sincere, simple, genuine demand, which the government was not ready to concede, many reasons, but finally the chair had to intervene, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, without any ambiguity, he instructed Mr. Rijiju to convey the feeling of the opposition, why the HM is not present, what is the reason of his absence, now it’s on record, Mr. Rijiju has to convey the reply to the House. We are waiting for that reply.”- PTI

Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha asked the govt. anout the steps taken to ensure the wider representation of judges from ST and SC communites in the higher judiciary.
Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal replied that govt always sends it recommendations to include judges from ST & SC communities to Chief Justice of High Courts. He also added that Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) has provisions for ensuring the wider representation of judges from SC, ST, OBC communities in the judiciary.
Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) provides the procedure for appointment and transfer of judges to the Supreme Court and State High Courts.
Responding to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the Opposition is raising question concerning the country. Mr. Kharge said that Home Minister and Prime Minister Marendra Modi must come to the House. Mr. Kharge cited former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, stating that “disruption is part of democracy” and members have every right to raise relevant questions.

Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan said on Thursday (August 6), “There are many issues to discuss. So far, throughout the entire session, the government has allowed the House to function for only one day, and ensuring the House runs is the government’s responsibility. We were promised that there would be a discussion on police brutality and atrocities, that the government would respond, and that we would also get an opportunity to present our views…We have still not received any answer.”- PTI
