The Union Cabinet on Thursday (August 6, 2026) gave the nod for a four-lane access controlled 135-km long corridor connecting Guwahati and Tezpur. The project is expected to be built at a total cost of ₹8,970 crore and will reduce travel time by half.
The project will be developed under Built Operate Transfer mode under which the National Highways Authority of India grants a private vendor the right to construct a facility, run it for a set period to recover costs, and then return the full ownership.
The corridor is expected to increase the average travel speed by 100%, reduce travel time to half, and improve overall road safety, according to the press statement of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The project includes a 5-km long Emergency Landing Facility on Tezpur bypass, which has been finalised in coordination with the Indian Air Force.
It will also include five 5 major bypasses totalling 58.7 Km, thereby easing congestion on stretches passing through densely populated areas such as Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli and Tezpur, as per the statement. It will also have 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers and an elephant under-pass
The project will provide seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the press statement added. It will also improve connectivity to eight industrial parks, two aspirational districts of Darrang and Udalguri, three tourist nodes – Maa Kamakhaya Temple, Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park, three major railway stations, two airports, and two waterway terminals.
