The Government Railway Police (GRP) seized 68 kg of ganja in an Express train at Jolarpet railway station in Tirupattur on Thursday.

Police said that, as part of a special drive against illegal transportation of narcotic substances and inflammable articles in trains under Operation Narcos, a team of GRP police personnel was conducting surprise checks in halted trains at the railway station.

The express train, which was on its way to Chennai, halted on platform one at the railway station. The team searched the coaches of the train, where they found two abandoned tourist bags in the luggage carrier of the general compartment in the train. When they opened the bag, they found bundles of ganja.

Initial inquiry revealed that a gang of three persons got down at the railway station after they noticed a police team entering the train to search the coaches. They abandoned the consignment in the train and fled the spot. Police also analysed CCTV footage to nab the gang that was involved in ganja smuggling. A case has been registered by GRP Jolarpet, and further probe is under way.
