The Centre has approved fisheries development projects worth ₹353.01 crore in Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), including a state-of-the-art wholesale fish market in Hyderabad with comprehensive cold chain facilities at a cost of ₹47.03 crore.
This was informed by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) in a written reply to a question raised by Rajya Sabha member K. Laxman on Wednesday.
The Minister stated that the Centre’s share in the projects aimed at developing fish farming and aquaculture amounts to ₹112.68 crore. Approvals have been granted for various initiatives under the scheme, including the establishment of hatcheries, modern aquaculture systems, fish sales outlets, market infrastructure, livelihood development programmes and a state-of-the-art wholesale fish market in Hyderabad.
A Murrel cluster in Mancherial district along with the establishment of a Murrel Centre of Excellence was also announced. To strengthen fish storage, transportation and marketing facilities in Telangana under PMMSY, approvals have been granted for 771 two-wheelers equipped with ice boxes, 341 three-wheelers, six insulated vehicles, 185 fish kiosks and two live fish vending centres, he said.
The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad, has been appointed as the nodal agency for examining, approving and monitoring the implementation of proposals received from States and Union Territories under PMMSY.
The NFDB has also organised 389 training programmes benefiting 15,565 fish farmers. Under various initiatives, the Centre has approved 21 freshwater fish hatcheries, 823.68 hectares of grow-out ponds, aquaculture inputs covering 759.86 hectares, 11 Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) units, 89 reservoir cage culture units, two mini feed mills, livelihood support for 4,970 traditional fishermen, and the distribution of 52 boats and nets, according to a press release.
