The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a search operation at a jewellery store in Abids, Hyderabad, on Monday, June 22 and seized around 1.6 kg of gold jewellery for allegedly violating mandatory hallmarking norms under the BIS Act, 2016.
The inspection revealed that the establishment was offering gold jewellery articles for sale without the mandatory BIS hallmark. Officials also detected jewellery bearing old hallmark markings, which they said was in contravention of the provisions governing the sale of hallmarked gold jewellery.
The seized stock comprised rings, necklaces and pendants, with the total quantity of gold jewellery confiscated during the operation estimated at approximately 1.6 kg. Further action has been initiated against the establishment under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
“Consumer protection remains a key priority for BIS. We urge buyers to purchase only BIS hallmarked gold jewellery carrying the BIS logo, purity mark and Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number,” said P.V. Srikanth, director and head, BIS Hyderabad branch.
BIS said it would continue market surveillance and enforcement activities to safeguard consumer interests and promote quality and transparency in the marketplace.
