All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge has reportedly asked Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, K. Selvaperunthagai, to “wait” while he considers the latter’s request to be relieved of his duties as president of the State unit. Mr. Selvaperunthagai recently met Mr. Kharge in Bengaluru and conveyed his request. Even before the elections, he had expressed his desire to step down as TNCC president.
Sources close to him said he had reached a stage where he was unable to function effectively as the head of the Tamil Nadu Congress and hoped to be relieved immediately. “Kharge has asked him to wait for two or three days,” said a close confidant of the TNCC president, adding that the swift cutting of ties with the DMK, a long-term ally and a committed anti-BJP force, for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam had left him disillusioned.
