The Government Railway Police (GRP) seized a consignment of 12 kg ganja in an express train at Jolarpet railway station in Tirupattur on Saturday.

The police said that as part of a special drive against illegal transportation of narcotic substances and inflammable articles in trains under Operation Narcos, a team of GRP police personnel was conducting surprise checks in halted trains at the railway station.

The team searched coaches of the express train, on its way to Chennai, where they found two abandoned tourist bags with ganja.

Initial inquiry revealed that a gang of three persons abandoned the consignment and fled the spot after they noticed a police team get onto the train. A case has been registered by GRP Jolarpet. The police also analysed CCTV camera footage to nab the gang involved. A probe is under way.
