The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started the third phase of link roads at various locations in the city, taking forward the project first conceptualised more than six years ago.

Link roads are small stretches of road development, which would connect two existing major thoroughfares, thus providing alternative stretches for arterial roads in the city, thereby reducing traffic chaos.

The roads were first planned in 2019 by the Town Planning wing of the GHMC, along with slip roads-- which are laid as a go-around of major junctions where traffic is heavy. During the initial two phases of the project, a total 31 stretches were completed, which not only eased the traffic flow, but also opened the gates for real estate on the developed roads.

In Phase-III, a total 18 stretches are being envisaged for completion across three zones, Shamshabad, Rajendranagar and Khairatabad. Of these, a total 11 stretches are planned in Shamshabad Zone alone, which has been added to GHMC during the merger and de-merger of the erstwhile GHMC area.

The longest stretch too would be laid in Shamshabad, from Gollapally Junction to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) service road at Pedda Golconda, covering a total seven kilometres.

The other stretches in Shamshabad, which are to be connected, include Thorrur-Nagarjuna Sagar Road (1.6 km), Injapur-Munganur Road (2 km), Badangpet-Nadargul main road to Nadargul road (2.6 km), Badangpet Main road to Thurkayamjal via Ramalayam of Nadargul (3.8 km), Mallapur Cross road to Kurmalguda (3.2 km), Kurmalguda to Nadargul (3.3 km), RCI X road to Srishailam Highway (2.6 km), Shamshabad Railway Crossing to Dharmagiri Road (5 km), Shamshabad Bus Stop to Rallaguda road (4 km), and Dondupally junction to ORR service road.

In Rajendranagar, the stretches are, Bandlaguda to Narsingi (0.85 km), ORR Service road to Chevella road via Kismathpur (5.5 km), Kismathpur to R&B road near Prestige villas (2.05 km), Dargah to LV Prasad Eye Institute (0.85 km), Farmaish Hotel to Taramati & Bharadari via Kendriya Vihar apartments including the new bridge on Musi (2.5 km), and Bapughat Bridge to P&T Colony East Side of Esa River (2.1 km).

Khairatabad has one major stretch connecting Lok Bhavan Road to R&B guest house and a link road from Begumpet Railway Station. The link road stretches will be laid from Greenalands junction to Necklace Road (1.6 km), and Necklace Railway Station to Patigadda (Parallel to railway track) via Park Hotel covering one kilometre.

Officials informed that works have already been launched where right of way exists, and at other locations, property acquisition is underway.
