The Trinamool Congress (TMC) moved the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday (June 10, 2026), challenging the legality of the search operation carried out at the party office adjacent to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat area on Tuesday (June 9, 2026). The search was executed in connection with the allegedly forged signatures of Trinamool MLAs.
The matter was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya by senior advocate Kishore Datta.
The petition was filed by senior MP Kalyan Banerjee on behalf of the party, in which Mr. Kalyan Banerjee alleged that the raids and search operations had been conducted in the absence of the main witnesses in the case, and that important party documents had been scanned at the two party offices (the second being Ms. Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s own office at Camac Street) where the simultaneous raids and search operations were conducted.
The matter is scheduled to be heard on Thursday (June 11, 2026). The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police searched the residence of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Tuesday (June 9, 2026) in connection with the alleged forging of the signatures of two Trinamool Congress MLAs.
Both Ms. Banerjee and her nephew and party general secretary Mr. Abhishek Banerjee were not present in the premises at the time of the search, and therefore, former Trinamool MP Subhasish Chakraborty had said he could not allow the CID officials inside.
However, the CID officials said they had come to search the TMC party office on the premises, and not the residence of Ms. Banerjee, and accused Mr. Chakraborty of “obstructing the investigation”.
The CID is investigating a letter nominating Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, which was submitted to the Speaker on May 20. Trinamool MLAs Ritabarta Banerjee and Sandipan Saha have alleged that their signatures on the letter were forged. They were then expelled from the TMC.
A First Information Report was registered on the basis of their complaint at Kolkata’s Hare Street police station, and the case was later handed over to the CID. The State agency then issued several summons to Mr. Abhishek Banerjee, who had signed the letter. However, he did not appear in person, citing health issues, and sought 15 days more to respond.
