A 53-year-old man from Bengaluru was arrested by Katpadi police in Vellore on Tuesday for reportedly damaging an ATM of a public sector bank in an attempt to steal cash.
The police said the arrested person was identified as S. Varadarajan, 53. Initial inquiry revealed that after being unemployed, he was loitering along the Chittoor - Katpadi - Arakkonam - Chennai rail route for the past few weeks. The police said that he identified the ATM outlet near farmers’ market in Katpadi. He reportedly tried to break the locker of the machine but failed in the attempt.
Officials of the bank saw the CCTV camera footage and alerted the local police, who nabbed him. The police seized mobile phones, welding machines, and fake ATM cards. A case was registered. He was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
