A 45-year-old driver was arrested by Katpadi police at Christianpet police check post near Katpadi in Vellore on Saturday for illegal transport of river sand from Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu.

The police said the arrested person was identified as J. Sugan, a resident of Dharmapuri district.

They said a police team was on routine patrol at the Christianpet police check post, located along the Tamil Nadu - Andhra Pradesh border, when the team stopped the lorry. The team checked the vehicle and found loads of river sand in it.

The police said that the consignment was proceeding to Chengalpattu district for private contractors from Andhra Pradesh. The lorry driver was unable to produce valid documents for such transport of river sand from neighbouring States. The police seized the vehicle with sand. A case was registered and a probe is under way.
