Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai is set to visit the mausoleum of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Wednesday (June 3, 2026).
At a time when the Congress and DMK are no longer in alliance, Mr. Selvaperunthagai’s visit has fuelled speculation. It may be mentioned that in the past, even when the Congress was in alliance with the DMK, the party had not followed the practice of visiting Karunanidhi’s memorial.
Mr. Selvaperunthagai sought to play down the significance of the visit, saying he had been paying his respects at the mausoleum ever since Karunanidhi’s death.
“Can I stop paying my respects simply because we are no longer in an alliance? In Tamil Nadu politics, Kalaignar’s (Karunanidhi) evolution and contribution are undeniable,” he said.
He pointed out the AICC had also remembered Karunanidhi on his birth anniversary. “Remembering M. Karunanidhi on his birth anniversary — a visionary leader, prolific writer and champion of social justice. His commitment to equality, education and public welfare continues to inspire generations across India,” he said, quoting the AICC’s message.
In the meantime, Girish Chodankar, AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, is expected to meet Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. He is likely to seek a Rajya Sabha nomination for the Congress, according to sources.
