The Chennai Corporation has already established and is maintaining two Blue Flag beach zones at Marina beach under the international-standard beach development project. Each phase covers around 20 acres and includes 20 bamboo shade structures, 40 reclining chairs, 12 seating benches, four watch towers, and 24 dustbins.
According to civic officials, the Blue Flag certification plan also comprises regular bathing water quality monitoring, targeted marine litter reduction of up to 85%, controlled algal vegetation preservation, and a strict code of conduct addressing labour conditions, and the prevention of gender-based violations.
Facilities including a meditation centre, reading room, selfie points, children’s play areas, and separate play equipment for persons with disabilities have been created. The beach zones additionally include 12 wheelchairs for persons with disabilities, CCTV surveillance, first-aid rooms, storage rooms, and separate toilets for men, women, transgender persons, and persons with disabilities.
Automatic drinking water dispensing units and breastfeeding rooms for mothers have also been established at the sites.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran recently inspected the Marina Beach portion which has been developed under Blue Flag certification programme under Teynampet zone and reviewed maintenance works being carried out at the locations.
Officials were asked to ensure continuous garbage clearance during the summer holiday season owing to increased public footfall at the beach. Directions were also issued for regular maintenance of free public toilets and pathways constructed for persons with disabilities.
The Commissioner also inspected the Chennai Marina swimming pool maintained by the Corporation and reviewed water maintenance, sanitation, and changing room facilities at the premises.
