The Taxpayers’ Association, Vijayawada, has urged the Andhra Pradesh government to remove the additional Value Added Tax (VAT) and the road development cess on petrol and diesel, in the interest of citizens.

Addressing the media on Thursday (May 28, 2026), members said the heavy taxes were one of the reasons for the rise in fuel prices, and that scrapping them would bring relief to people.

In the State, petrol attracts 31% VAT and diesel 22.5%. On top of that, there is a surcharge of ₹4 a litre on petrol and ₹3.07 a litre on diesel, and a road development cess of ₹1 a litre.

The members said ₹25,000 crore was reportedly flowing into the State government’s treasury through these taxes.

In memoranda sent to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav and Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad, the association asked them to scrap the additional taxes to make fuel cheaper.

Through these taxes, ₹7.57 lakh crore was going into the treasuries of the Central and State governments, association president V. Sambireddy and secretary M.V. Anjaneyulu said.
