At least six workers were killed and two others are feared trapped after an under-construction bridge collapsed during a storm in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district late on Thursday (May 28, 2026).
The bridge, being constructed between Morakandar and Kandaur villages over the Betwa River, collapsed while labourers were working at the site. According to officials, a group of workers had taken shelter beneath a hydra crane amid heavy rain when a portion of the structure gave way.
“After receiving information that a slab had collapsed at the under-construction bridge and that several people were trapped beneath it, we reached the spot and launched a rescue operation,” said Arvind Kumar Verma, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Hamirpur.
Local residents said construction work was underway when a severe storm hit the area. Soon afterwards, portions of the bridge collapsed, bringing down supporting pillars and trapping workers under the debris.
Rescue operations were continuing at the site, with authorities fearing that two workers remained trapped.
