A massive fire broke out in one of the intensive care units (ICU) at the trauma centre of Sawai Man Singh Government Hospital here late on Sunday night, claiming the lives of six patients, who died of burns and suffocation. It is suspected that the fire, which erupted in the ICU’s storage section, was caused by a short circuit. The SMS Hospital is the biggest government-run health facility in Rajasthan.

The trauma centre building, where the fire erupted on the second floor, is situated opposite the main hospital building on Tonk Road. The centre’s in-charge Anurag Dhakad said 11 patients were being treated with critical care support in the neurosurgery ICU, while 14 others were admitted to a second ICU on the same floor at the time of the incident.
