An accused in a theft case lodged in Chanchalguda Jail pulled off a dramatic escape from Hyderabad’s Gandhi Hospital after swallowing five nails inside the prison to get himself shifted for medical treatment.
The escaped prisoner, identified as Syed Ameer Hussain, had earlier been arrested by the Trimulgherry police under the Malkajgiri commissionerate in connection with a theft case. Following his judicial remand, he was lodged in Chanchalguda Jail.
According to officials, the incident was reported on Sunday (May 24, 2026) when Ameer swallowed five nails in what police suspect was a calculated attempt to secure a hospital visit. Alarmed prison authorities immediately shifted him to Gandhi Hospital for treatment and observation.
While undergoing treatment at the hospital, Ameer complained of stomach discomfort and requested permission to use the washroom. It was there that he made his move.
Police said the accused escaped through a washroom window before jumping over a compound wall and fleeing from the hospital premises, triggering panic among the escort staff. “He crossed through the window and then jumped a wall to escape from the hospital,” a police official said.
A case has been registered and two special teams have been formed to trace the absconding accused. Police are examining CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas to track his movements after the escape.
