A curfew-like situation has prevailed in Vizianagaram for the past week. Most people prefer to stay indoors to avoid the heatwave and high temperatures between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Traffic jams are normally the order of the day at the Ring Road junction, which now wears a deserted look, only a few vehicles on the road. Daytime temperatures have ranged between 38 to 42 degrees Celsius in the Fort City. The temperature stays around 33 degrees Celsius even in the late evening and at night, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The high temperatures have hit the livelihood of many traders, business slowing at shops in PW Market, GT Road, Balaji Market and other places. Many hotels remained closed for the past week because of poor business.
Vizianagaram Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy asked people to stay indoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to avoid the high temperatures and the heatwave. He suggested that those suffering from sunstroke follow the instructions of doctors and medical staff.
He directed municipal authorities to put up raised green covers at major traffic junctions so that two-wheeler riders get some shade while waiting at signals. Municipal Commissioner B. Bala Swamy said the civic body would set up green covers at more junctions soon.
