
A 51-year-old woman from Papanasam in Thanjavur district, who had acquired Singapore citizenship, was arrested for allegedly casting her vote in the recent Assembly election despite being ineligible to do so.
The police identified the woman as Mumtaz Begum, wife of Mohamed Shajakan, of Thirumanjana Veethi in Pandaravadai near Papanasam. According to police sources, Mumtaz Begum had gone to the Tiruchi International Airport to travel back to Singapore when immigration officials, during a routine verification, found that she had voted in the recently concluded Assembly election.

Following this, immigration officer Mukesh Ram Gautam lodged a complaint with the Papanasam Police. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Mumtaz Begum and arrested her. Further investigation is under way.
