The Senate will again gather at the Capitol on Sunday in an attempt to negotiate an end to the now 40-day government shutdown, after a rare Saturday session yielded little progress despite mounting pressures.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters entering the weekend that lawmakers will remain in session until a deal is reached to reopen the federal government. He said Sunday that if Democrats vote to advance the House-passed continuing resolution, he will offer another stopgap spending measure with a later expiration date combined with three full-year appropriations bills
Senate Democrats, meanwhile, are still pushing an offer to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits for one year.
The effects of the shutdown have intensified in recent days. On Sunday, the Trump administration instructed states to "undo" efforts to distribute Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to over 40 million Americans amid the shutdown.
And after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered reduced air travel at dozens of major airports, more than 1,000 flights were canceled on Saturday for the second consecutive day.
President Trump, meanwhile, is set to return from his Mar-a-Lago on Sunday with plans to attend the Washington Commanders-Detroit Lions NFL game in Landover, Md.
ESPN reported on Saturday that the president wants the Commanders to name their new stadium after him, and he is expected to discuss his wishes with the leader of the football team's ownership group while at the game.
