A spokesperson for Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Monday that she is “fully focused” on the California redistricting ballot proposition amid questions about her plans for the 2026 midterms.
Ian Krager, Pelosi’s communications director, said on the social platform X that the former House Speaker is “fully focused on her mission to win the Yes on 50 election in CA,” and she will not make any announcements concerning her future until after Tuesday’s election.
“Any discussion of her future plans beyond that mission is pure speculation,” Krager added.
Krager then responded to his post with a Chinese proverb: “Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know.”
NBC News reported Monday that multiple California and House Democrats believe Pelosi will not run for reelection. She told the San Francisco Examiner last month that she will not announce her plans for 2026 until after the ballot initiative is settled.
The initiative, Proposition 50, would transfer control of redistricting in the Golden State from an independent commission to the state Legislature. The initiative, backed by Pelosi and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), was added to the ballot in response to the GOP-led Texas Legislature redrawing its congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Pelosi, 85, filed for reelection in November 2024, just more than a week after securing a 19th full term in Congress. According to quarterly reports her campaign filed to the Federal Election Commission, Pelosi’s operation received more than $2 million in contributions from January through the end of September.
She has not, however, publicly announced her intention to run again in California’s 11th District.
Multiple challengers have also entered the Democratic primary in Pelosi’s district, including state Sen. Scott Wiener and Saikat Chakrabarti, a former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
According to an internal poll conducted for Chakrabarti’s campaign in September, 51 percent of respondents in the 11th District said that while they supported Pelosi in the past, it is “time for a change.”
