LIVE Video: Trump press conference with FBI Director Patel

The Senate on Wednesday failed for the ninth time to reopen the federal government as the impasse on Capitol Hill deepens.

On Thursday, the upper chamber will switch gears and vote on whether to advance a $852 billion defense appropriations bill. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) scheduled the vote in an effort to put Democrats on the record if they block the measure, as Republicans spotlight how the shutdown is impacting national security.

It is unclear if senators will vote again Thursday on the continuing resolution to fund the government through Nov. 21. Wednesday's measure failed 51-44.

At the White House, President Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel held a press conference on crime, where the president suggested San Francisco as a potential target for surged federal law enforcement.

This afternoon, a federal judge in California delivered a blow to Trump’s efforts to fire furloughed federal workers — issuing an emergency order temporarily halting any firings.

Earlier Wednesday, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought indicated layoffs could exceed 10,000 employees during an appearance on "The Charlie Kirk Show."

The president will host a “ballroom dinner” at the White House later in the evening.
