The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has asked Kozhikode District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh to inquire into the complaint that over 100 families have had to face waterlogging after the encroachment and filling of the wetlands at the Sarovaram Biopark and Kottooli in Kozhikode city.

In an order issued on Thursday, Commission judicial member K. Baijunath asked the official to submit a report within 15 days. It was pointed out that the road from Vazhathiruthi and Kizhakkanthiruthi to come to the city via Eranhipalam had been blocked and inundated because of waterlogging. It was alleged that a private institution and an educational institution were behind the filling of the wetlands. The Commission suo motu registered the case based on media reports.

It is learnt that local residents had opposed the filling of the wetlands. However, their protests did not serve any purpose, and the people had to suffer waterlogging in their areas. The residents are demanding that the mud used to fill the land be removed.
