In a suspected case of medical negligence, a 31-year old woman ended up losing nine of her fingers following a fat removal surgery at a private cosmetic clinic at Thampuranmukku near Kazhakuttam.

Neethu, a software engineer hailing from Sreevaraham in the capital, also suffered a cardiac arrest and has been on ventilator support for weeks after she underwent the procedure in February. Following a complaint from the victim’s family a few weeks ago, the Thumba police have registered a case, naming Shenal Shashankan, the doctor who carried out the procedure, as the main accused.

Kazhakuttam Assistant Commissioner J.K. Dinil told The Hindu that further action can be taken based on the report of a medical board.

“We have requested the District Medical Officer to form a medical board, which will meet on Thursday. Documents related to the procedure have been handed over to the DMO. Only based on the opinions of the doctors from the medical board, further steps can be taken,” said Mr. Dinil.
