Virudhunagar District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Manager of Union Bank of India, Seithur, to pay a compensation of ₹25,000 to a customer and his two children for not returning the pledged original documents even after repayment of loan.

Forum chairman S.J. Chakkravarthi and its member M. Muthulakhsmi, in their order of January 9, issued an ex-parte judgment with the bank not filing any response.

The complainants, T. Sivasubramanian of Inamnachiyarkoil and his daughter V. Padmadevi and son, S. Darasathapandian, had lodged a complaint that the bank manager had not returned the documents deposited with the bank given as collateral security. Mr. Sivasubramanian’s wife had taken a loan and settled it on September 5, 2024. She got settlement certificate from the bank. However, after her death, the husband and the children had produced legal heir certificate and sought the documents back.

The forum observed that the bank was in the wrong and directed the manager to pay the complainants ₹25,000 for their mental agony and ₹10,000 towards legal fees.
