Sam Underhill is set to miss out on England’s Six Nations squad after being referred for surgery on an ankle injury.

The flanker suffered the injury during Bath’s defeat by Northampton on Sunday, aggravating the same joint that he damaged during England’s autumn campaign.

Underhill is not one of England’s centrally contracted players but he has been one of the national team’s most consistent performers.

No time frame has been put on his recovery but England\'s opening Test against Ireland is just three weeks away.

Speaking earlier this week Bath coach Johann Van Graan said: ‘Sam picked up the knock to the ankle setting up the try for Max Ojomoh and played on but after the game it was quite sore and that is a bit of a worry for him.

‘Sam is a very important game for us and he plays very well in big games. Looking back at the Premiership final he was one of our best players that day.’

With Steve Borthwick due to name his England squad on Tuesday, Underhill’s injury opens up space for the likes of Tom Willis or Henry Pollock to join the squad.
