Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario suffered a fractured ankle in a collision with Manchester City attacker Savinho, the shot-stopper facing months on the sidelines.

Spurs have confirmed that Vicario has undergone an operation after suffering the injury in the 4-0 win over the Premier League champions on Saturday.

And Mail Sport can confirm Vicario suffered the fracture from the impact of Savinho\'s challenge in the first-half.

The shot stopper required on-field treatment to treat the damage, but the Italian continued and played the rest of the match.

But he complained of major pain after the final whistle and tests have flagged a break, which has required an operation.

‘We can confirm that Gugliemo Vicario has on Monday undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle,’ read a Spurs statement.

Vicario later took to Instagram to update supporters after undergoing surgery on Monday

‘The 28-year-old suffered the injury during Saturday’s Premier League victory at Manchester City.

‘Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training.’

The news arrived as a surprise to Vicario’s Tottenham’s team-mates on Monday, who had no inclination of the severity of the injury after the game.

Vicario is crucial to the way head coach Ange Postecoglou sets up his team given the keeper’s ability to pass from the back. Former England Fraser Forster is expected to deputise for Vicario.

He later posted on Instagram: \'Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect. I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately there was no way around this one.

\'I needed surgery. I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while. A massive thank you to the doctors and the staff. The operation went well, and from tomorrow I’ll be working hard to come back stronger, fitter, and ready to give my all for you again. Thank you to the Spurs fans for all the love. See you soon on the pitch\'.
