Marc Guehi is set to captain Crystal Palace at Brentford on Sunday amid continued interest from Newcastle.

Mail Sport understands the England centre-back will feature in the season opener after his club rejected a fourth offer of £60million plus £5m in add-ons from the Magpies last week.

Eddie Howe wants Guehi as his top summer signing, but Newcastle are now considering walking away from the deal, given its rising cost and PSR implications.

Speaking on Saturday night, Howe said: ‘The conditions have to be right for us. We can’t do something that goes against the longer term good of the football club. We will try to make the right decision.’

Sporting director Paul Mitchell has been handling negotiations with Palace chairman Steve Parish. So far, the South London club have held out for a deal of at least £65m.

However, Guehi’s contract expires in 2026 and with no indication of the 24-year-old signing a new deal, it could make business sense for Palace to sell now.

Guehi is keen on the move and there is a feeling it could still happen, but Newcastle are exploring alternatives if the hierarchy decide the package has become too expensive.
